I grew up watching Gilligan’s Island on TV. It aired from 1964 to 1967 and was one of my favorite shows. The theme song still resonates, “Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip…” It was a fun show that helped exotic travel ideas grow in my mind. So when I had to write an epitaph of someone for an English assignment when I was in my junior year of high school, I naturally chose Gilligan. Picture this on Gilligan’s tombstone:
Gilligan
I led the normal life of any
Uncoordinated
Human being
Until the seven of us
Were
Shipwrecked.
After that my self
Became
Known
And I got kicked around by my
Fellow
Shipwreckees.
I usually got the brunt of the
Criticism, work
And mistakes.
But I have them to thank for letting me keep
My
Self-image.

Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed reading it very much. Checking up on peoples poetry and writing is something I do often. I try to keep up with today’s trends so I’m more active in the writing community. Thanks again for sharing this.
Thanks for your comments! I haven’t written poetry in years, but am interested in the poetry that I wrote when I was a teenager/young adult. It’s a different me and it’s fun to share this stuff. I’ll check out your blog.
